Since Ages , MAHA MRITYUNJAY MANTRA has been used for attainment of salvation or MUKTI, treating incurable diseases and for the welfare of all living beings. This Mantra (32 letters) is found in ancient epics like Yajur-veda(3/60), Rig-veda (7/15/12), Atharv-veda (14/1/17), Shiv-Puran(Sati-khand 38/21/42), and in other holy books named as Mrityunjay-Tantra, Mrityunjay-Kalp and Mrityunjay-Panchang. Ancient Sage Shri Vashishtha added Pranav (OM) to make MAHA MRITYUNJAY MANTRA (33 letters), each letter of which represents one crore gods (Devine powers). Several other saints & sages have used derivatives of this Mantra in different manners. Presently, to the best of available information, thirty types of  MAHA MRITYUNJAY MANTRA are in practice.
